Problems Older Adults Face
Every person has his or her own problems. Problems have become so prevalent in our society that we even saw patterns among age groups.
For children, their problem is simple. They just wanted attention and, of course, their immune system is not that strong. Therefore, parents need to give them what they want without overdoing it. Aside from which, these little ones should be given the immunization and physical protection they need for them to avoid getting sick and being frail.
Teenagers have a different set of problems. They are coping with the new emotions they are currently having. They also are getting used to the changes in their bodies. Ladies have to deal with their monthly period. Guys have to feel weird about the change of their physique and voice.
Younger adults also experience different problems. Problems like going to work, paying their student loans, getting promoted, looking for a person they can spend their life together, etc. fill up their minds constantly. Not to mention they also have to worry about rent and the food they will be eating.
Married adults have to deal with problems related to home, family, and themselves. Is the house not breaking apart? Where can I get the money for Kevin’s immunization? How am I supposed to make my family healthier? Should I go visit mom?
Older adults, on the other hand, need to deal with a new set of problems. This ranges from physical to social issues. And frankly speaking, we believe that these individuals have never dealt with these issues before. They may have faced it when they were younger but these issues were on a whole new different scale.

- Physical Issues
We cannot fully go in depth with the lives and needs of senior citizens without discussing their physical problems. Growing old is equals to feeling old. With the many years you have been through, it is expected of you to submit to the changes of time. This does not exempt your body.
When we talk about old age, it is a period of physical decline. Our senses will begin to slow down including our reflexes. Along with our physical declines come chronic conditions that inhibit us from functioning the way we are supposed to.
These physical issues will often go worse depending on a senior’s:
- Change of living
- Faulty diet
- Undernourishment
- Infections
- Intoxications
- Overeating
- Insufficient rest
- Emotional stress
- Overwork
- Disorders of the endocrine system
- Environmental conditions
- Heredity
And to maintain the overall physical well-being of an elderly, family members should provide them with the most comfortable place to stay. These individuals should not be subjected to a sudden change in their environment. It will only lead to their physical decline.
- Mental Issues
The chronic conditions of the elderly are not limited to affecting their torso and extremities. Some chronic conditions target a person’s mind. Take dementia as an example.
With old age come mental disorders. Elders are even susceptible to these disorders than ever before. Why is this so? We can all attribute this to two common psychotic disorders namely:
- Senile dementia
Senile dementia refers to the severe deterioration of one’s mind. It is distinguishable because of a person’s loss of memory and their failure in controlling their bodies.
We use the term “dementia” to point out to the decline of a person’s mental ability. This condition is no joke. It can affect the daily living of a person as this could leave the patient cripple.

- Psychosis
This psychosis is in connection with cerebral arteriosclerosis. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, “cerebral arteriosclerosis is the result of thickening and hardening of the walls of the arteries in the brain.”
Symptoms of this condition include:
- Headache
- Facial pain
- Impaired vision
